Storms and Floods
最終更新日:2020年12月15日
Japan usually gets hit with a few typhoons between July and October every year. Because of global warming, strong, violent typhoons that may result in a lot of damage all over the country are becoming more common.
Almost every year, Tokushima City incurs some damage from strong winds or severe rain because of its location along the common route of typhoons. In addition, there is a strong possibility (70-80%) that we will be hit by a big earthquake.
Be prepared for such disasters well advance and think about what to do in the case of a disaster.
About storms and floods
Typhoons and tropical cyclones
A tropical cyclone is a huge circulation of air that develops and grows over the warm sea. Tropical cyclones near the Philippines can change into a typhoon when they gain a force of more than 17.2 meters per second wind speed. Typhoons hit Japan mostly in the summer and at the beginning of autumn. When a typhoon is approaching, please watch out for tidal waves, violent wind, and heavy rain.
Local downpour
Local downpour is a heavy rainfall that starts suddenly and stops in a short time only in a small area. This is most likely to occur around the end of the rainy season, but it is relatively difficult to tell when and where there will be this type of downpour. It can cause floods, landslides, and other damage.
Flooding in city areas
Most rainwater flows into drainage channels on the side of the road in city areas where a large part of the land is covered in asphalt or concrete. This condition causes city areas to be more prone to flood damage after a local downpour even if the rain only lasts for a very short time. Because flooding is so unpredictable, please evacuate as soon as possible in such an event. If you are in the basement during a local downpour, late evacuation may claim your life because basements flood easily.
