119 Multi-language Interpretation Call Service

 As part of Tokushima City’s Fire Bureau, when calling 119 or in the case of an emergency there are simultaneous three way interpretation services available so that foreign residents who do not speak Japanese may be able to communicate smoothly.

About “119”

  • In the case of a fire where a fire truck is required, or in case of severe injury that requires the assistance of an ambulance, please dial 119.

  • When you dial 119, you will not be charged for any form of phone fees.

  • Even when the services of a fire truck or ambulance are utilized, there is no cost. (It is only any cost due to medical treatment received at a medical facility that will become your individual responsibility)

What is the Simultaneous Three-Way Interpretation Service?

When Calling 119

 When you call 119, you, an employee of the fire department, and an interpreter will be able to speak to one another at the same time. This is how we can achieve smooth communication with foreign residents.
 
When you first make the call, it will take several tens of seconds before you are connected to the phone interpretation center, so please stay on the line and refrain from hanging up until then. When you are connected to the phone interpretation service, please answer any questions they may ask of you.

In Times of On-site Response Interpretation

 In these cases, you and the emergency responder will use your mobile phone to pass back and forth while the interpreter on the other line listens and communicates to the both of you the necessary information to allow smooth communication between you and the emergency responder.

Available Languages for Interpretation

 The languages which this simultaneous three way interpretation service offers are: English, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, etc.

Please Note the Following

  • If you brought your mobile phone to Japan from overseas, there is a possibility it will be unable to connect with the Japanese emergency call lines. In such cases, please call from either a pay phone, or request someone nearby to call on your behalf.

  • The region in which this multilingual support is available is within Tokushima City (the red portion of the map below) within Tokushima prefecture. If you are outside of this designated area, there is a possibility interpretation services will be unavailable to you.
